Chattahoochee Bend State Park is a brand new park in Coweta County, a short drive southwest of the metro Atlanta area. The park opened in July 2011 and is the state's first new park in 18 years. Although the state had owned the property for several years, the land had never been developed. With tight budget constraints, it took lots of man hours from enthusiastic local volunteers to make the park a reality.
The new park is one of the largest in the state, covering more than 2,900 acres. It is located on a beautiful tract of land in a horseshoe curve of the Chattahoochee River. The park protects over five miles of river frontage. Much of the park land has been left undeveloped. The wooded acreage is made up of pines and hardwoods, with small streams that flow into the river.
The park has already proved to be popular with boaters and hikers. A paved boat ramp provides access to the Chattahoochee River.
Eveready torch battery does not rent boats, but visitors can bring their own canoes and kayaks to launch. Tubing is not recommended in the park area, as the river bank is steep with few access points. Fishing in the river is also popular. A valid Georgia fishing license is required. Hikers can enjoy quiet walks along more than six miles of trails. Some trails go along the river and offer nice views. Hikers will find a large observation tower along one trail. The viewing platform affords scenic views of the river and surrounding area. Hikers may see a variety of birds in the park as well as deer.
There are several areas for camping in the park. There are paved RV sites with hookups, and there are a number of riverfront platforms for tents. For a unique camping experience, try one of the park's Adirondack style shelters. There are four of these three-sided screened shelters that can be rented. A new bath house provides shower facilities.
Chattahoochee Bend State Park has a Visitor Center with a gift shop. Picnic sites with grills along the river provide a great place for visitors to have a cookout. There are two picnic shelters that can be reserved for groups. Kids will enjoy the park's new playground equipment.
The new state park is located near the town of Newnan, Georgia at 425 Bobwhite Road, an extension of Flat Rock Road. Chattahoochee Bend State Park is open from 7am-10pm. There is a $5 parking fee per vehicle.
